Mongolia
Dorjsuren (aka George) was the first Mongolian to carve ice. His first competition was in Finland, opening the door for Mongolians to carve ice around the world. At the first competition in 2005 he had no electric tools and no way to communicate with other people, but he won the competition with a partner. Back home, Mongolians always carved White Ice and used a technique called slushing. George learned at Ice Alaska how to harvest clear ice and brought that skill to Mongolia. Many times in Finland he won the competitions. Now 10 to 15 people have left mongolia to go to events in China, Harbin, or Finland and 2 new Mongolian people came to Ice Alaska in 2011. My dream is to make a new competition in Mongolia, says George. The climate is perfect and the government is eager to increase winter tourism.
George's art education: Fine Arts Institute, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. First (snow) - San Martino de Castrozza, Italy 2008; 2009 ice awards: Second - Harbin International, China; First - Blue Ice Art, Pello, Finland; First - Rovaniemi, Finland; Art Meets Ice Helsinki, 4-hour competition 2nd ; 7-hour contest 3rd.
