Last year, Ice Alaska boasted a wonderful and most impressive snow dragon’s head carved from snow. He was so popular that we now have four spectacular snow sculptures scattered about the grounds. The first one you will see, just as you enter the front gate, is an amazing, eye-catching and bigger than life snow sculpture of the Ice Alaska globe logo. The globe is snow and the carver standing in front of it is ice. The snow on the map of the United State has been faceted and glistens like diamonds. This amazing piece was sculpted by Steve Cox who sculpted last year’s dragon. Steve is in the process now of carving the polar bear snow sculpture, located where the dragon was last year, at the entrance into the woods where the competitions are taking place. The polar bears are simply enchanting, a true “aww” moment with mother and her babies.
If you walk straight into the woods, you will find a snow carving sculpted by James Stutgart. It is titled “Murder of Ravens”. It’s hard to describe this unusual and fascinating sculpture. A group of ravens or crows is called a “Murder” and it’s easy to see that this group of snow ravens are passing judgement. It’s a beautiful piece that you will just have to come and see for yourselves.
Further into the woods, nestled into a quiet corner, is a thrilling, incredibly beautiful set of angel wings, spanning a distance of about fifteen feet wide and standing at least ten feet high. Dean DeMarais is the artistic talent who sculpted this marvelous snow sculpture. The piece is designed as a photo op. You can climb right in front of it, spread your arms out and become an angel. Simply “angelic!”. This sculpture holds a big surprise. If you walk around to the back, a complete angel has been carved into the back of the wings. There is an ice bench in the back, in front of the angel, if you would like to sit quietly and admire the beauty of this work of art.
Every walking trip around Ice Alaska’s park yields more serendipitous surprises. You are in for a treat.
