It is a beautiful day to go to the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds and take a walk through the Enchanted Forest. The ice carving competitions have taken place and ribbons are on display for first, second and third place winners. The Youth competition is complete also. The kids’ sculptures, judged with the same standards as the professional ice carving standards, are delightful. If they keep carving, they will one day be ready for world competitions. And new this year is the Family Snow Sculpture competition. On display are five whimsical snow sculptures done by teams of up to four family members.
The weather is beautiful, the slides are slick and fast, the hot chocolate is good and often the fire pits are blazing and you can even roast marshmallows. Come during the day and play in the Kids’ Park, go home for supper and come back to walk around the breathtaking sculptures under colored lights. You will be in for a magical experience.
Ice Alaska at the fairgrounds will be open until March 31st, weather permitting.
“Some people don’t like winter
Some people think it’s too cold
I think they just like to complain
Or maybe they’re just too cold.
I like bundling up
In coats with boots on my feet
I like to see my breath fog up
In the rain, or snow, or sleet.
I like to break off icicles
And break them for a drink
In the winter the world goes quiet
I like to listen and think.
Some people don’t like winter
I say they just don’t get it
You might want sunshine all day
But I say you can forget it.”
